MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- One of the country's largest banking firms has made a standing offer to move the Minnesota Twins to Charlotte, North Carolina, after the 1998 season, a newspaper reported Sunday.

NationsBank, based in Charlotte, made the offer several months ago to Twins owner Carl Pohlad, an unidentified team official told the Star Tribune.

"NationsBank has told Carl: 'Tell us what you want to do. If you want to move and still own the team, we'll build you a stadium. If you want to sell, we have buyers to put the team in Charlotte' " a team official said.

Attempts to reach a bank spokesman Sunday night were not immediately successful.

Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson had planned to call a special session of the Legislature this month to consider building a new Twins ballpark. But he agreed to wait, probably until October, to give key lawmakers more time to finish work on a stadium financing bill.

The legislative task force has yet to agree on a plan to pay for a ballpark that could cost up to $500 million.

Pohlad has said the team needs a new stadium because he is losing money in the Metrodome.
